Dear Future Leaders,

Welcome to the University of Hawaii School of Architecture! Prepare to have some amazing professors, build life-long friendships, and become a part of the architecture ‘ohana. Don’t be shy here. Your courage and confidence will grow along with your knowledge and understanding of architecture through all the crazy projects and presentations along your academic journey. We hope you will grow fond of all the design, innovation, and your unique style.

The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) Hawaii Chapter is your support group. We are the voice of students not only at the University of Hawaii, but also for the state, and nation. Founded in 1956, AIAS has a deep history of closely working with professionals and promoting excellence in architectural education. We are continuing to improve students’ lives by working with professors, administration, and professionals, as well as flying to Washington DC to advocate for students’ rights – all from this little island in the middle of the ocean.

AIAS Hawaii is a student-run, non-profit organization whose mission is to promote excellence in architectural education, training, and practice; to foster an appreciation of architecture and related disciplines; to enrich communities in a spirit of collaboration; and to organize students and combine efforts to advance the art and science of architecture. We place the architecture community, leadership, and opportunity in your hands. AIAS brings students together to build upon their skills of leadership, communication, and teamwork while providing a chance to see architecture across the United States through quad conferences and gatherings.

This year marks AIAS’ 60th anniversary. Be sure to join us in our festivities beginning with Membership Week! Come to the first lecture of the semester at 6PM on Monday, August 29th, and stay for the following AIAS Pau Hana Reception. From 12pm-1pm on Tuesday and Thursday, get out of the studio and mosey on down to the courtyard to learn more about our mentorship and studio representative leadership programs. Don’t forget to become a member and join our raffle! Winners will be announced on Thursday evening before starting movie night!

Build your confidence and leadership skills with us. Fifty-seven dollars gives you access to our members-only events, opportunities to connect to the professional community, AIAS national content, and experiences of cities across the nation. Stop by the AIAS Hawaii office in room 217 to learn more about what we do, and visit aiashawaii.org to see what we’ve been up to, and aias.org to become a member!

Sincerely,
Rebecca Ogi, 2016-2017 AIAS Hawai'i Chapter President
